Christmas Party

Family,

I will first start off and say that I got my converter and my Christmas package on Thursday. We were in Tarija and I got them there.  I want to say thanks for sending my comp the presents.  We have a tradition here in Zona Tupiza. If you get a package you have to share the treats you get so the Elders were waiting patiently for me to open my package.  I opened it shared the treats then I looked at the presents and saw some for Hna Arone so I gave them to her.  She was so excited.  This is really the first time in her life that she received Christmas presents from anyone. She told all of the missionaries there that oh Hna Nielsens parents sent me Christmas Presents.  Then she tried opening them and I asked her what she was doing and she said I want to see.  Well I told her that they were for Christmas so she had to wait until Christmas,  I think I killed her.  She talked me into Christmas Eve so then we will open the packages.  5 will be just fine to call (your time) we have 40 min.  The only problem is, is that I don't know the area code or the country code.  So if you could look on internet, if not I will work out a way that I can try and call you first so you can see the number.  We haven't found skype and it is not a cell phone but from rumors is that we will be receiving them by the end of the year.    Hermana Arone will be going home on the 3 of Jan.  About 2 weeks before transfers so I will be trying to find a ward member to work with during this time.   This week went a little better than the next.  My comp didn't speak all day on Wed.  She wouldn't even walk by me.  I asked her what was wrong and she said nothing she is just thinking about things.  Poocha no sé que voy hacer.  Well then on Wed night we went to Tarija for our Christmas devotional with the President. We left at 8 and got to Tarija at 4.  Elder Valdabanito was across the isle from me and he was scared to death and didn't sleep through the whole thing.  I took an hour nap and woke up and he saw that I woke up and started talking.  He talked till 4.  Though my comp had a panic attack and so it was good he was awake because he helped me get her under control.  Oh and he says hi.  The Christmas party was great our group did a couple skits and it was great.  Then we watched the movie 17 miracles that the church made.  It was really good I highly recommend it.  Then we ate and left for Tupiza at 7:30 and got home at 3.  We were so tired on Friday we had so little energy it was great.  Now we are all looking forward to talking to our parents on Sunday, well Hna Arones parents will call on Sat because they travel on the 25th.  Well I will stop here and then hopefully we can have a good conversation on Sun.  think of your questions ya. I am very glad that this week is over

Thank you for the Christmas card I just got it today. Also I have not received the converter yet. I kind of chuckled that I got a Christmas card but not a package. Oh well maybe the packages are just floating around in the mail somewhere. The Elders here are taller than me. I think if not the same height the only person shorter than me is my comp. She is a little bit taller than Hna Menacho but not by much. With Christmas time all I see are decorations but no one really talks about it. Hna Arone, E´ Rodriguez, E´ Valdabanito and I are planning a party for our ward on the 23. What I do know is that on the 24 the family gets together and at midnight they eat dinner which is pig. Next they just have a little party eat panaton, which is just fruit cake and hot chocolate. They also let off a bunch of fireworks and drink a lot. From what I heard is that we don't leave to work on the 25th because of the drunk people. It isn't really a big thing down here. I think I will let you pick the time you want to call because my comps parents will call on the 24th. If we attend church, church is from 9-12. I don't know if it will be sacrament meeting or not but I will ask Presidente Ibañez. I don't know the time difference now. I think it is two hours but I am not sure. I don't remember the area number and I will let you know next week but my phone number is 6942284. So let me know next week when you want to call. Well after Monday my week went down hill. It was transfer time and everyone but hna arone and I had transfers. We went to District reunion Tuesday had a farewell thingy with the Elders leaving. Then we went back to the house to drop off our Preach my Gospels and other things. My comp puts her backpack on the ground and goes to the room and lays on the bed. She said I want to sleep for about 15 min and then we will go to lunch. Well it passed 15 min I told her it was time to go and she just said mmmmmmm. Then I waited 10 min and told her ok Hna lets go and she got mad and said I don't want to. She then stayed in bed all day long. I washed the rest of my cloths and made Christmas decorations for the house during this time. I also did a deep clean on the house. She got up in the afternoon I asked if she was sick and she said no and went right back to bed. I didnt eat anything that day because I don't have anything in the house to eat. Then Wed hit. I did the normal Hna its 6:30 time to get up and guess who didn't get up. I was so frustrated I was ready to tell her if she didn't want to work that I would find someone to work with and she can just sit there and sleep. Then I thought that wouldn't be nice so I heartattacked her desk to be nice. Then I went to the room at 12 and said in a really nice voice. Hermana I am hungry can we please please please go and eat. She was silent for a min then said yeah. I asked if she was feeling ok and she said yeah she said she is just trunky and didn't want to work. Oh man was I ready to take those hearts back. Than other things happened this week like our shower breaking and bathing with cold water for a week. No investigators came to church and that was a blow. Also other things that I just wont mention. All I can say is that I am glad it is over. We did meet some really great people though and that is what counts. We also taught great lessons and we went on splits so that was good, it gave us an opportunity to go to the houses that we haven't been to in a while. Well just remember that the church is true and though life has its struggles the gospel will always help. Oh and don't drink, drunk men are gross and I hate them.

I'm really hurt by you all!

Well this week was a good week. President Dyer didn't end up coming to Tupiza after all. It was changed into us going to Tarija for a conference with Elder Uceda and his wife. It was a really good conference. It was about obedience and how the missionaries in all the world aren't following the rules with exactness and so every missionary is getting the same lecture. We left Tupiza at 8:30 on Friday and got to Tarija at 2:30 in the morning. We were lucky and got seats in the front of the bus. That means that we saw everything of the road of repentance. I just went to sleep but before I did I could hear the Elders making noises and saying oh almost we almost went over. Then on the way home I decided to watch the road see what it is all about. I decided it was like riding the wild mouse at lagoon. You think you are about going over the edge and then wham you are back on the road. It also doesn't make you feel good that you see the crosses of the people who did go over. My companion was freaking out. She just kept saying a prayer over and over again out loud. I told her to go to sleep but she wouldn't. My companions first name is Fiorela. She also has a second name and a second last name but I wont tell you because you didn't ask. We are starting to get into the rainy season now and we will leave for the day and it is sunny than the clouds come in and it starts to thunder and lighting really bad and the wind is blowing and it starts raining. The people here say that it is nothing. We need to wait longer for the good stuff. Ok and the other question I will take offense to. How much of what your companion says to you do you understand. Thank you for doubting my abilities for understanding Spanish. You all are mean. I know the things you say about me and my Spanish through a source and I must say you all are not my favorite family right now. Oh and if I don't understand Spanish it wouldn't be my fault but my families for not having faith that I could learn Spanish. I don't even want to finish my letter now but I will. Oh and I am always learning new words but not that you would believe me anyways. About ice cream I don't know I eat the frozen milk ice cream. It is really good, they also have orange and other flavors. I don't know I don't eat ice cream all the time. I live in front of the Black Market. It is a market that is yellow. That is all I live by. I haven't found a place to skype. Who knows I am a Little hurt right now and might not want talk to you all for Christmas only my source. I want an apology and I might think about forgiving you all. This is all I am going to write I would have written more but you all don't deserve it. I will now start chatting with Hna Nevarez and Hna Cherres. They love me oh and I started writing this letter before I read your letter so you all got a little bit more info about my trip. Even though you all don't deserve it.

Familia,
This week was really good. We had 4 people come to church….FINALLY.
We were really excited. Hopefully these people can attend church next
week and also that we can get more. We met really awesome people who
I think will progress a lot. We just need to keep the faith. My comp
got sick yesterday but is feeling better today. We have our Christmas
devotional this week. President Dyer is coming to Tupiza and it will
be a 6 hour event. We are preparing talents for this. Our Distrito is
putting on two skits. One is a serious one and the other is funny.
We shall see how it goes. This also means that every missionary in
Tupiza is cleaning their house really well this week so when President
Dyer and Hermana Dyer check our houses they will be spotless. Our
District Leader came with us to our appointments with our
investigators on Sat. Just our luck none of our citas were there. We
ended up knocking on doors with them. It helped though because we meta lot of new people. My comp is frustrated with the ZLs, She feels
like they don't appreciate us as much as they should. I just sit and
listen to her rant. She told the DL how she felt and that night we
received a phone call from the ZLS to apologize to us. I just had to
laugh. My comp did not want to talk to them so I answered and relayed
the message to her. She doesn't believe they are really sorry. Well I
don't know if you will be getting this letter this week. I am having
troubles opening my mail. You just might not get a letter. If you do
the Lord loves you and wants you to hear from me. That skirt I gave
my comp I have seen her wear it a lot throughout the week. She really
likes it. As a matter of fact, she is wearing the skirt right now. I
taught every one in English class Head Shoulders Knees and Toes. They
loved it, who knows I might try the hokey pokey next. Truth be told
nothing really exciting happened this week. I have nothing to write
about. So I will now respond to your questions. WE are teaching a
heck of a lot of people. The only problema is a lot of time we make
return visits and they aren't there. No lie it stinks bad. I always
have testimony building experiences every day. All I have to do is
read the scriptures or during a lesson when something happens. It
isn't hard in the mission to have those. There are dogs here, most of
them are really calm. Thank goodness because I don't want to be
bitten. The people here for a living sell things. They have markets
all over the place. Also we have a mine that is about 2 hours away
that the men go and work in. Truth be told this is probably one of
the poorest places in Bolivia. Tupiza is really good though, it has
very beautiful mountains and the people are great. It's very
interesting to be in a different country and learning a new language.
I love the culture here and the music. Its fun to see when they have
parades in the streets and they have their costumes on. They are very
poor but when there is a party they sure know how to celebrate. It's a
good thing. Well I love you all lots and have a fantastic week. The
church is true. Oh and To all the November Birthdays HAPPY BIRTHDAY

I FOUND IT!!!!

Well you might be thinking what in the world did Bears find well let me tell you.  I found GARLIC BREAD!!!!!!!  Hermana Arone and I were looking for somewhere to eat last week and there are a lot of pizza restaurants here for the tourists.  We picked one out of the 50 that is on the street and as I read the menu I saw it.  A picture of the most delicious bread I have ever tasted with its golden color.  I was so happy I almost started crying.  I thought I was going to have to wait until I got home until I could taste this delicious bread but no it was not the case.  I think I am crying right now as I am writing this.   Ok now that I have told you the good news now it is time for the questions.   There is nothing to do with Thanksgiving this week.  I don't think the people here realize that it is Thanksgiving.  I am feeling better.  Sunday night I started putting mentisan on my throat and then putting a scarf on and sleeping that way.  I put it on Sunday and Monday night and by Tuesday I was feeling ton"s better.  Metisan is good for everything, you have a cold...mentisan....arthritis...mentisan.....headache.....mentisan.  If you tell them here that something aches or something is wrong they tell you mentisan and it actually helps.   Its in a green tube and is specially made in Bolivia.  I think I will buy about a hundred when I leave here.  We did not go to Tarija this week so we did not sing.  We got a phone call Tuesday night from the District Leader and he said that we would not be going to Tarija.  Then we found out that the conference would be put off for two more weeks.  So we are guessing that we will go to Tarija the first week of December.  Then again President Dyer needs to come to Tupiza for interviews with investigators so who knows maybe we will have a mini conference here.  My area is completely flat.  There are no hills in any part.  It is a heck of a lot different thanPotosi.  Lets see for exercise one time we went running with the Elders and you would be proud of me I ran the whole time, well I stopped once for my comp.  The Elders invited us again but Hna Arone doesnt want to because it was a long ways away.  It was probably a little more than a half mile and we walked home.  Now I run the stairs in our apt.  If I don't run stairs I run in the patio. The sky here in my world is yellow like the sun but here in Tupiza it is blue sometimes gray with lightning bolts.  This week we made plans to help my comp finish her mission strong.  She has some regrets in the past and I told her well its not to late to finish the mission strong.  We made some goals and now I will help her complete them.  Life is good here we are having a hard time to get people to attend church.  That is our frustration right now.  We are going to try different ways to help them.  We are also planning a grand Christmas activity for the Branch with the Elders.   It will be great a little Talent show after that we will serve Panaton with hot chocolate then after they will have a Fiesta and dance the night away while the missionaries return to their houses.  It is an activity we thought of that could hopefully bring investigators and friends that we can meet.  Well life is great here the Church is True and its important to go every week to church and attend all of your meetings.  Eat another serving of Banana Cream Pie for me this week.  Love you all

Family,

Lets see about the Elders.  We have 5 NA in the zone (including me).  Here in Tupiza though we have just Elder Thorne and me.  There are two in Villazon (I don't know how far away that is) and one in Uyuni (six hours away).  I don't know the other Elders yet but when they come here to go to Tarija I will get to know them.  The rest are all Spanish speaking.  So that is 6 here in Tupiza and 3 in the other parts.  A lot know the basic English like hi whats your name also other things that they yell out at me when walking down the street.  Then we have the tourists, some speak English some speak German.  It doesn't matter any ways they are all weird.  I don't know if I said but I have started an English class here and we had a good turn out.  They listen to a few English Songs but the old ones.  They also have their own music that I love.  One is a group from Potosi. I will be buying their CD before I come home.  I don't think they grow anything in Tupiza.  They all go to the campo and grow their things.  The toilets are normal, well in the house it is normal.  Some houses you have to go and get water from somewhere else and pour water into the toilet so it will flush.  OK first off no my heart was not stolen.  No he did not ask for my money he just took it.  We were in the market buying things for our house.  So I had about 200 bolivianos.  My comp wanted me to pay for everything because she had to buy some stuff.  That was fine with me because I get reimbursed for that.  At first I was ticked and I prayed something would happen to that man.  Then I had to repent ask for forgiveness because I forgive him.  Then I also prayed he wouldn't spend it on beer but on his children.  It wasn't too exciting.  Well this week was good.  I tried liver for the first time. Can I just say it is the nastiest thing I have ever tried in my life.  I wanted to puke every time I took a bite.  I also ate some other kind of meat that I don't remember what it is.  My companion got her carta de trunky.  Its her letter that says what day she finishes the mission and asks a whole bunch of questions about home.  They say that when the missionary's receive this they get trunky.  That is why it is called the carta de trunky.  I got a really bad cold this week.  It started off Thursday night as I went to bed my throat started hurting.  Friday I woke up and my head,throat, and body were hurting and my nose was clogged.  It was not fun at all.  I also ended up getting a fever.  Then Saturday I felt better my throat just keeps hurting.  Today though my throat doesn't hurt as bad and my nose is still clogged.  To top it off we are practicing for the conference this Friday.  Our musical number is the EFY Medley.  My comp wants to kill me because I cant sing when I am sick but she wants me to try.  So if you could all pray for me for this day I would greatly appreciate it.  Well life here in Tupiza is great.  It is a great town even though I eat dirt every day.  The people here are really great and we have met some really good investigators.  We are just going to continue to work hard and find these people.  Oh we got a letter from President Dyer that said we can Skype on Christmas.....and now that I got your hopes up I am going to break them.  Tupiza is old school and there is no skype here.  Looks like you will be calling like normal. Well who knows a lot can change in a month.  I guess we will see. They also don't have ATMs here.  Well they have them but you have to have a certain card and be a member of the bank here to withdraw money.   My comp is doing good, she thinks of home a lot.  She is a sweet heart though cares about everyone.  Well that was my week.  Have a fantastic week and I will write to you next week. Oh and my comp and I have plans to visit a museum that has things about Butch Cassidy.  Well love you all lots.  Remember to go to Church this Sunday and attend the Temple because both places are fantastic.

Familia,

Dad my house number is 262 we live on Avenida Santa Cruz in from of market.  My favorite thing in Tupiza is the people and ward members.  This is the first area that I have had where the ward members want to help.  Well they would be branch member but oh well.  I didn't speak in church yesterday but the week before so last Sunday.  We eat dinner at the President of the Branches house and as we were leaving he asked me to talk in church.  Just me I don't know why but that is the way it goes sometimes. My comp doesn't speak English but she has plans to move to Utah after the mission and attend BYU.  I did go on the Road of Repentance but it was at night so you cant see anything.  Usually when we travel on this road it is in the night but the Elders said once in a blue moon you travel in the day and they said yes I will cry when that day comes because it is terrifying. The bus was chapi it was like a greyhound bus and it stinks.  There are a bunch of cholitas and people chewing coca leaves.  Oh and people who don't shower for about a month.  Needless to say it stinks. We have taught a lot of lessons this week.  The people here are really great though, well except the guy who robbed me in the market sucks but oh well.  We have an investigator Justa who is really great and she is looking for the truth and wants to find the answers.  We also have Zeniada who is 16 she is progressing really well. I cant believe I have been out for a year it is crazy.  All the Elders keep saying wow you don't have much time left.  Thanks for mailing the converter I really need it.  I need to charge my camera.  Um I don't know what I need for Christmas sure maybe a new skirt I gave one to my comp because she really liked it and it was one from the Missionary Mall.  Maybe new socks to wear when walking every day.  My sister Hadlee so she can give me a hair cut would be nice.  Other than that surprise me oh some kit kats would be really nice, or gobstoppers.   Other than that I will be home in 6 months so I don't know.  Oh how is my car?  Tell it I will be home soon :).  I loved the pics that Hadlee sent of Halloween what is wrong with the rest of you? Well I think I will be traveling to Tarija this week or next for a special conference with the area 70.  We don't know when but we will find out  Tupiza is hot but the wind blows every day and that is the bad thing because it is just dirt in your face and in your mouth and I have to hold my skirts down so they don't fly up.  The good thing is is that it is a warm wind so I only need a jacket in the night.  Also I have ate more Chuño here than I have in any of my areas, yep I still don't like it.  Well I hope you have a great week.  Always remember me every minute. I forgot to say that Patty from Potosi was baptized on Saturday and Hna Cherres said she would send me photos.  Also a family we were working with went to church on Sunday.  I feel happy, just to let you know.

Wow I don't think I have ever seen so many questions in my life. First Halloween, yesterday I saw some kids trick or treating and I almost started crying. They were all dressed up as witches. They have a thing that is the first part of November which is Dia de los Santos. They create a worshiping place in their home for someone who died. Then they cook this persons favorite meal and put it in front. Next they open their doors for people to come in and say a prayer for the person and the person who prays gets goodies like beer, cakes, and crackers. I don't know how many members are in my area but there are a bunch. We are a branch here and Hermana Arone and I share a Branch with the Elders. There are only 6 Elders here and now two Hermanas. We have more people come to church here than I did in Potosi. Hermana Arone is from Nasca Peru. She finishes her mission in December but I think she leaves in January. The second comp I will be killing off. She is 25 years old and is the only memebr in her family. She has been a member for 6 years now. She is a talker. I don't think I have talked to any of my comps this much. The ride to Tupiza was long. I left Potosi Wed at 7:30 in the morning for Sucre. We got to Sucre about 10:30. I waited in the Airport for my ride until 1:40 then it was off to Tarija. We got to Tarija at 2:30 and waited for our bus to Tupiza till 7. We hopped on the bus and got to Tupiza at 3 in the mornin and waited until 3:30 for the Zone Leaders to come pick us up. I didn't get sick. I like traveling in a bus because you don't feel the motion of the ride as much. The dirt roads are as smooth as dirt roads can be. The people dress here in the same as everywhere else. I would say though I saw a lot more people dress differently in Potosi than I did here. The Spanish is the same here as was in Potosi. Less Quechua here, though every place has their own form of speaking. For example in Potosi every one puts a y after everything. In Tarija its Churro, and here I don't know quite yet what is different. The ZLs and the DLs live two blocks up from us and the Elders who we share the Branch with live two blocks down. It's nice, they are really cool Elders. Our house is in the Street Santa Cruz and I don't remember the number but it is a new house and is really nice. Only the best for the Hermanas. The Elders asked for the help of the ward members and they found the house for us. So when we talked to the members they all say oh yea we already know where you live. It's a little scary but nice. I have not seen any animals in my travels. I have only seen horses that are way too skinny. It is sad. I have also seen the biggest ants in my whole entire life here. I don't know if you know this but I have a phobia of ants. Ok with what kind/brand of cars do they drive. I don't know dad, I am a girl. They drive cars with 4 wheels that go beep beep. I will find out and have a report for you next week ya. The Elders don't have a car, we walk every where here. As for Butch Cassidy I didn't realize that I was in the area. I will look for the train station because there is a train that takes people places. I don't remember what it looked like in the movie but in my area it is all dirt road. There a some roads that are cement but few. My black shoes turn brown at the end of the day. Today we hiked up to a cross on the top of a mountain. We had a talk, took pictures and then came back down. It was good. I think later this day we will head with the Elders to play wally. This week is going to be really good. The ward members are great here. I am excited to be here. There were sister missionaries here before about 15-20 years ago. I will see what the future has in store for me. Hopefully I am in Tupiza for a long time. Pray for that will ya :) na it's where the Lord wants me to go right. Well I don't know what else to ell you besides the church is true and I love you!

I'm going, I'm going I'm gooooooooooooone!!!!!!

Well I will start out with my week to tell you how it went and then I will tell you about transfers. OK, really I will start with the questions. I have not seen baseball in Bolivia or seen them play. I do not take deworming pills. When I leave they will give me a list of pills to take to clean out my system. Monday we went and cooked lunch in Elder Gonzales and Elder Lopez house because they left this week. Half of the Zone came. We ate french fries, hot dogs and fried bananas. It was really good, I enjoyed it. Then we played games, then the night came and the whole Zone came to have a family home evening. Tuesday was the last District meeting before transfers. We had refreshments like true Mormons. Wed nothing special happened. Then Thursday came and my comp got sick again. We were in the house but then I told her we had an appointment with Patricia and that we needed to see her. We went there and we had an awesome lesson and finally Pati said I want to be baptized, I know it is true. I almost started crying I was so happy. I have been with Pati since I have been here. She has a date for this Sat. Friday my comp was sick again. We were in the house all day like Thursday. I told her I was going to call the Elders so I did. We got permission to go get an ultrasound. Saturday She has a stone in her gallbladder. She will probably be going to Cochabamba to have it removed. I spent the day talking and translating over the phone to Hermana Dyer so she could understand what was going on with my comp and also another Hermana in the area. Sunday we went to church and found out that we are changing chapels and that we will now start at 2:30-5. Yep everyone is going nuts with this change. My comp still felt sick so we went to eat first and then returned to our house. The Hna who cooked for us is from Peru and she cooked a Peruvian dish. It had fish in it. I just smiled and said as sweet as I could that we couldn't eat fish. Boy am I greatful for this rule in the mission. It was only the first dish so I finished my second dish just fine. We went to send off the Elders who finished their mission with the Zone. Then we went to eat at our Pensenistas house and returned home. There we waited for the dreaded call for transfers. The call came at 9:15. My Zone Leader told me to sit down. I thought he was going to tell me that my comp had a transfer since she has to go to Cochabama to talk to a doctor there. No turns out that I am going to TUPIZA!!!!!!! I am opening a new area with Hermana Arone. I talked a little with Hermana Arone in Cochabamba and she seems cool. It is the first time in the history of the mission (I believe) that they are sending Hermanas to Tupiza. What has me scared out of my mind is that they have the road that is called el calle de arrepentimiento which translates into the road of repentance that you have to go on to go to Tupiza. You all know I have a problem with heights and you have seen me on the road to Ben Lomond peak. I am going to die. I will leave tomorrow morning or tomorrow night depending on what the miners are doing. They are on strike right now and are blocking people who want to come into Potosi. I cant tell you how sad I am to be leaving Potosi. I am going to miss so much the people here. I think I might just start crying now. Oh well the Lord knows he needs me in Tupiza and there are people there who need me. Well keep me in your prayers please. I have not traveled to Sucre yet. It is this week tomorrow we will be traveling. I will be there until Wed night, Tuesday is interviews and wed will be a conference with the Zone Leaders, District Leaders and Trainers. I will be the only Hermana during this training and you know what that stinks. Why you might ask? Well I will tell you why. Being the only Hermana means that if I don't respond to questions I will end up getting called on. Also I will for sure be practicing. Man I don't like being the only Hermana, oh well what can I do. My comp and I get along great, she reminds me of Mik. It gets to the time when I want to sleep and all she does is talk and talk and talk. I think I have fallen asleep on her a few times. She actually is not feeling better. We were in the house Friday, a part of Saturday and after church Sunday. I am happy I have been healthy too but it stinks big time when your companion is sick and that you can't do anything to help her or go out and work by yourself. This week was really good. We have met some really great people. First off we have Josefina Oquendo. We were knocking on doors and we were at the house across the street and I saw her washing her clothes on her patio (her patio is really high up and above the door so we could see in). She kept on looking at us and I told my companion that after this door we are going to do some service and wash clothes. We finally made it across the street and when they opened the door she said she was busy but her neighbor would love to talk to us. I told her well we would really love to help you wash your clothes and that we would love to talk to your neighbor and you. She paused a min to think about that. Finally she said yea you can pass. We started for her clothes to help but she told us no she would wash and just listen to us talk. We got to know her and taught her about prayer and then she asked what book I had and then we talked about the Book of Mormon. She asked how much it was and we told her it didn't cost anything. She then asked if she had to be baptized to read the book. We told her no she could have the book as long as she would read it. She then said I would really like to read it, then she told us that the JWs would come to her house and talk to her but she couldn't read the book of the JWs without being baptized and buying it or she would go crazy. We then set up an appointment for later last week. We met her and talked some more, we had plans to teach the restoration but before we asked if she read the BOM and she said yes. We asked if she had questions and she said yes about Baptism. She read Moroni 8 about baptisms for children. We ended up talking a little bit about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We talked some more and her questions were interesting and then we found out that she has a tumor. She is 25 years old and has a little baby. We also talked to her husband. Since we will not be in Potosi or working much this week we might have an appointment with her and her husband Friday but we will see. We will be in Sucre on Tue and Wed. After we will be in Bertanzas on Friday for an invasion to help the Elders there find new people. Bertanzas is an hour away from Potosi. Then elections is this weekend, they vote on Sunday but cant do anything Sat or Sun. They cant go out and buy things or sell things these two days. Then we wont have church on Sunday because they cancel everything. I haven't heard if we will be out preaching but I don't think so. Well I love you all lots. Have a great week

Well this weekend was great. It was a great opportunity to listen to conference. I must say though it isn't the same in Spanish. I miss hearing the voices. I was the only NA who stayed to watch it in Spanish, well it helps that I am the only NA sister in Potosi and need someone with me so ya know. It was good and I really enjoyed the talks. Transfers are every 6 weeks in the mission. Sorry about Elder Hoffman mom. Maybe I will be transferred in his area the proximo cambio. There are sisters in Cochabamba, Potosi, Sucre and Tarija. I have made a bet with my companion. Yes I did and I know I said I wouldn't do it with another latino. Any who our bet is as to where I am going, I think I am going back to Cochabamba she says that I am going to Sucre or Tarija. This time it isn't oreos, it arrozsitos y chanchitos. They are a new treat that we discovered and like. I guess we will find out on the 23. Oh Hadlee hi I love you, no worries I haven't forgotten about you. This week was good. I must say we didn't do anything exciting only saw Conference. This morning we went to the mine. I feel old because I am the only one who has visited the mine. The only thing missing this time was my camera because my camera battery died. I asked an Elder for his adapter and he said he would bring it yesterday but he didn't so I was out of luck. Next week I will be traveling to Sucre for a conference with the President. I am not looking forward to that, I hate traveling to Sucre. Well I love you all, have a fantastic week. Peace out

I am making progress!

Hello,
I have had a significant change in my mission. It started in the night and my comp told me about it in the morning. I Hermana Jenna Nielsen talk in Spanish in my sleep! Whoot whoot I have been waiting for the moment and now it is hear. I am so excited I might just cry :). My companion is doing good she gets really bad headaches still so we are working on that. Patricia has not got baptized yet. We are just going to have patience with her and help her remember what she felt when she prayed to know that it is true. Our other investigators are doing good. The thing I learned here in Potosi is that the people want to be really sure of their decision and want to feel like they know every thing before their baptism. I have learned lots of patience with other people. While here in Potosi I have learned to be a nurse, therapist, and a lawyer. I think I will have lots of job options when I get home. I showed off Miks dance pictures to the Elder that is sitting next to me and he said that I might just have to go to Utah after the mission and look up your sister. He is from Arizona and I believe that he has plans to go to BYU after the mission. This week was good, we were in the house again Wed because my comp felt really crappy also yesterday. We went to the RS session of conference and it was really good. Though I missed my mommy because I thought of the times we went together. Don't worry mom we have next year. President Uchdorf gave a really good talk. During the conference the President of the Stake came up to me and asked if I would like to watch the conference in English because they could prepare a room for me to watch it in. I told him that I needed a companion with me and I was pretty sure that the sisters wanted to watch it in Spanish. We ate with the RS President yesterday. She had us enter into another room and her and her family didn't eat with us. I took the dishes to the kitchen and I told her her food was really good but it is kind of boring with just the two of us eating together and the next time we would like the family to eat with us. She then told me she didn't want to eat with us because my comp doesn't eat very good. She doesn't finish her food and she always has a look of disgust on her face. I have talked to her about that and she has started to eat all of her food. You all thought I was a picky eater, you have yet to meet my comp. We have started working in a new part of our area. Our area is huge and in my 6 months here I never went to that area. There are really good people there but also really strange. They also speak a lot of Quechua. I told my comp it was her turn to find the street and the door for us to knock on. She told me she didn't know how so I told her to say a prayer in her heart and listen to the Spirit. We knock on a door and she starts off with the introduction and then she asks the women her name. The women has a big smile on her face and starts talking, well the only thing I understood was mana indintin-quichu which is I don't understand in quechua. I then tell her thank you and kuidaconki which is take care. We walked away laughing and my comp said she didn't want to pick the street or door anymore. I told her to bad because that wasn't an option. We are learning together which is good. My comp is getting nervous about transfers I told her they were forever away and that we needed to enjoy our missions now and worry about transfers when they come. She told me they were in 3 weeks and that she would worry now. Oh well we will continue to work hard and have fun. Hello family,


Well this week was really good. We did the usual missionary stuff. Well we had Hermana Sullon with us on Wed in the morning till Thur in the afternoon while she waited for her companion to come from Cochabamba. My comp got sick again on Thursday after lunch. I am still as healthy as a horse I haven't had any problems yet (knock on wood). Thanks for your prayers for my comp. On Thursday the Elders told her that she needed to tell President Dyer and that maybe it would be better for an emergency transfer. She kept just saying no I can make it these next 6 weeks. I guess we will find out if she stays or if she goes in six weeks. One problem though is that she talks to everyone about her sickness and one thing about Bolivia is that everyone has an idea as to what is wrong. We will for sure have to visit a doctor here just to resolve the doubts. We are still working with Patricia and hopefully she has a baptism date for this Saturday, if not we will still continue to work with her. On Wed this week we were walking down the street and I hear Hermanas wait. I turn and it is a man coming down the street that I have never seen before. I thought oh no another drunk guy but the miracle was that he wasn't. He told us that he has met with the missionaries for 7 years and has stopped the past two and wants to meet with us again. I got his direction and made an appointment. Well the appt was for Sat in the morning at 10. My comp got sick again and was dry heaving because she didn't have anything in her stomach. I made her eat something and she felt better after and so we left at 9:30. Well it took us until 11 to find this house. We ended up knocking on a lot of houses and saying do you know family Ramirez, Juliano or Paulina. Finally we met someone who knew them. We got there and said Hermanas everyone was waiting for you. We entered his house and talked to him and his children because his wife left to sell things in the market. At one point he asked us well I need to know what I can and can't eat because I want to join the church. My comp and I just looked at each other and started teaching. We have another appointment with his whole family for Friday. We also had a lady stop us in the street on our way to lunch and say Hermanas my cousin is a member in Cochabamba and I want to learn more about your church. The Lord blesses his missionaries when we do what is right. I have not seen any converters here. I cant think of anything else that you can mail, maybe next week. My sister Mik is pretty. She should make me hair pieces and send them my way. Well I love you all lots. Have a fun week. The church is true and I LOVE YOU

Family,
Well things in Potosi are looking up. The weather has taken a turn and now it is hot during the day and a little bit chilly during the night. Patricia's Baptism didn't happen. She was fine with the interview with our district leader and we told her we would wait for her in the church at 3 on Sat. Well it was about 2 and we decided we should probably call her, we made the phone call, I started off with Hey Patty how are you doing? She then tells me ok (mas o menos) in a really sad voice. I asked her what was wrong and just as she was responding the call was cut. Then I tried calling her back but it went straight to voice mail. I take it her phone died. We ran to her house to see if she was there and she wasn't and her mother wasn't very nice and told us that her daughter wasn't there and she didn't know or care as to when she would be home. Her mother has never been nice to us, she is a little upset that her daughter is listening to us. Her in Bolivia if your parents are catholic you are catholic and if you change you are almost shunned from your family if they don't understand. Patricia is 26 and has problems with her parents. We called on Sunday and she said that she was at her aunts house but that we could go over to her house today. We have an appointment at 7 with her. Hopefully we can help her with whatever is going on. I did receive the birthday cards from the Relief Society, Primary and YW tell them all thank you for me. Life is good we finally found out what was wrong with my comp and now she is on medication to make her feel better and I hope that we can work full force now. So far she has had to have two IVs and needs one more. In case you are wondering no we do not go to the hospital to get this done we just have the doctor come to our house. It is the President of the only Branch in Potosi. Yesterday he was late coming back to the house to take out the IV well my comp said we are going to have to take it out. I told her have faith the doctor will be here. There was no way I was going to take that thing out. Well we waited and she said no we have to take it out now. She said I will take it out and you put a cotton swab on it. Well she took it out and I put the cotton swab on it. Lets just say that her arm was resting on my pillow and now my pillow case has blood on it. It is a good thing that I brought more than one. I could never be a nurse I just don't have the guts. This coming week is transfers, no worries I will be in Potosi. Hermana Cherres and I think that we will be together for three transfers but who knows. Nothing else really exciting happened this week sorry. Life is good though and the church is so true. I have seen miracles and look forward to seeing more. We are family, me and my brothers and sisters are we,

I thought I would write a song to start off. Lets see for the questions. I haven't seen the men carry wallets. The Elders have a little pouch thing they hook to their belts. The women don't really carry purses either. They have a little pouch that they tie to the wrist so the shirt covers it or in their shirt. They get robbed here a lot so you have to be careful. Ah this week was Chutillos. We asked the Zone leaders Tuesday what the plan was and they told us to work like normal. Well we talked to everyone and no one wanted to have an appointment on Friday or Sat. They all said next week you can stop by. We were worried because we didn't have anyone to visit so we just made plans. Then at 10:20 Thursday night I get a phone call from the District leader and he said that we weren't allowed to leave the house. Only for lunch and dinner could we leave and that for dinner we needed to be in our P-day clothing. Friday we just went home after lunch and slept, then Saturday we went to eat lunch at the Bishops house. After we were invited to our pensenistas house to take pictures with her daughter because she was dancing in Chutillos and with permission we went. Chutillos is where they dance for the Virgin Guatalupe. They dance for six hours all through Potosi and then they end in the Catholic church to pray to Guatalupe. Our pensentista was very upset at her daughter for choosing to dance. Also it is just an opportunity to drink a lot. The other daughter of our Pensentista works at the Red Cross and she said they had a lot of accidents and it was a good thing we weren't aloud to leave. I also learned this week when I eat with the Bishop to eat and leave never carry on small talk. The reason is that he asked us to speak in church. Then he asked us to prepare a musical number. We prepared but we didn't end up doing the musical number. After, a Brother who was visiting from Sucre came up to us and said thank you for your talks and making the members feel guilty for not helping out in the work. Patricia is doing great, her baptism is set for this Saturday. I am so excited for her and also worried for her. She doesn't have much support from her family at home so we need to see that she gets a friend in the church. That's hard because a lot of the members already have their friends and don't socialize with others. We have an activity planned for the 17th with just the members and then we are going to have an activity two weeks after that and tell them to invite everyone. Hopefully it will go well. Oh I finally got my hair cut. If you want to know, I didn't get it cut in a salon. I was brushing my hair and looking at it and asked my companion if she ever cut hair before. She told me no but she would watch her sister in-law cut hair. I told her that was enough and asked her if she wanted to cut my hair. No I am not kidding you so we sat down, she took the hair cutting scissors I bought before my mission and we cut it. I am sad to say that she messed up and now it is to my chin.......ok now that is a joke. Ha ha ha I bet I gave Hadlee a heart attack. No my hair looks good it is just a little un-even on one side but oh well it is cut and looks healthy. I cant think of anything else to write because nothing else happened this week. Oh I remembered what I wanted to say... Tell Cade that he has to keep playing baseball so that when I come home I can watch him play. Well have a good week I hope everyone does well in school. My favorite family in the world,
Well this week was really interesting and hard. First off Joels baptism. I already explained that we had to change it to Wed. Well Tuesday our DL and ZL told us not to worry about anything because they would take care of it. Well Hna Cherres and I got to the church at 6 an hour early to make sure everything was good and set up. Well the church was closed so we walked to the bishops house thinking that he was there to get keys to open the church. Well he wasn't so we walked to find a phone to call the ZL to have them come and open up. They didn't pick up their cell. We waited 30 min for Elder Lopez to show up. He is our DL. When he walked up he said what the heck no one is here. We waited and other Elders showed up and still no ZLs. Well, finally a member of the stake showed up and opened the church. We walked to the Baptismal font and there was no water. In Potosi if you want water in your baptism font you have to fill it up way in advance. It takes hours to fill up the font and another couple of hours to heat up the water. Needless to say there was not a baptism for him on Wed. The ZLs are the only ones with the keys to the font and the water. Joel's parents who aren't members and his Aunt who didn't want the baptism came and were a little peeved with us. We saw the ZLs when everyone was leaving at 8:15. The baptism was yesterday though and we reminded the ZLs I think every minute when we were traveling and in Cochabamba. The baptism was really good. He is way excited, and has made a promise to always attend church and read the scriptures. The down side is that getting members to come to a baptism is hard and also the Bishop or a member of the bishopric.

Well lets see I have no idea what Bolivia is known for, perhaps like Idaho potatoes. There is a potato in every meal, potatoes in the soup, potatoes in the segundo and thank goodness no potato's in the dessert. My travel to Cochabamba was really good. We left here on Friday night in the bus at 8 and we got to Coch at 5:00 in the morning and then waited an 1 1/2 in the terminal for someone to come and pick us up. We then went straight to the church to eat Saltañas for breakfast and to hear Elder Anderson. Everyone was there at 8:30 to listen and he didn't come until 10. We sang hymns during this time. Lets see he came with the area of the seventy. First we all went and shook his hand and told him our names and where we were from. Then we listened to the testimony of our President, and the wives of everyone. After that the floor was opened to any kind of questions that we wanted to ask an apostle. The third question was what can we do to keep the lord with us always after the mission. That ended the questions and started the talk of the seventies and Elder Anderson. It was really good and very interesting. The spirit was strong and we learned some things. Then we headed to another church well those that traveled to eat pizza. After lunch they wanted us to work with the Hermanas in Cochabamba. Well I switched with other Hermanas because they wanted to visit their area and I wanted to visit my area in Cochabamba. We went and visited my converts. They are good but struggling. It was really good to see them. Then we were back on the bus at 8:30 that night and got back to Potosi at 5:30 in the morning. We slept for a hour and then we headed off to church. We were tired and went to sleep really fast last night. I didn't get sick but my comp sure did. I asked if this happened in Peru to her when she traveled to the Temple and she said no never. Hopefully she can get better really fast. We talked to Patricia and she is doing good. We asked how she felt about her baptism and she said that she was really excited. When we left her house I wanted to cry I was so happy for her. I don't think words can even describe the joy I felt. I love how I have become an instrument in the Lords hands to find these people and I get the first hand experience to see their lives change. It is a wonderful feeling. Well her baptism date is on the 3 of September. This week is Chutillos and our pensenista and everyone is telling us how dangerous it is for us to go out because everyone from around the world comes here. Apparently there is a lot of robberies and drunk people. My comp is scared out of her mind and keeps saying she is not leaving the house. I tell her that unless we get the we cant go out from the president we are going out. I told her though we can change our study time in the night so that way we are in our house by 6. I also told her that we have the Holy Ghost and we can feel where we should and shouldn't go. She tells me she still isn't going out. I guess we will see what will happen. Nothing else I can think of but I love you all have a fantastic week and remember the CHURCH IS TRUE

Family,


Well hey there my family. This week has been good. My companion and I are great, she is feeling a heck of a lot better this week. She still feels nauseous after eating and sometimes throwing up after we eat. I told her that it wasn't OK for her health to be bulimic, she didn't think I was funny. No I am grateful to have her as my companion. I think I have learned a lot of things from her this past week. It is amazing the things that I have learned from every companion. I know there are reasons as to why they are my comps. Joels baptism is this week, he lacked lessons and so we had to postpone the baptism. It was supposed to be for this Saturday, so Saturday in the night we visited with his family picked the perfect time and arranged the day for the interview with our District Leader. Well lets just say that yesterday when I was giving the numbers to the DL he told me that we were traveling Friday night and wouldn't be back until Saturday late in the night. Then he said we need to change the baptism to Thursday. Well they wanted Saturday because his dad drives a bus and he is always traveling and this night he would be here for the baptism. Now we don't know if it will be for next week or another day this week. We have a Family Home Evening with them tonight and we will ask what they want to do. We are going to watch the Testaments. I bought The Testaments, Legacy and the 20 min Restoration for 6 bolivianos when I was in Cochabamba (in case you are wondering that is less than a dollar). We also talked to Teresa and she now has a date for her baptism on the 3 of September. When I call to talk to the DL on Sundays he always asks how many assistance she has for church. When I tell him 3 he asks me why we are waiting and we need to talk to her more about getting baptized earlier. I tell him that it is her decision. If she wants to wait that long she can. He gets mad at me and says we need to work on this. Well we found a family that lives at the top of my area and they seem really interested in the gospel. We made it our goal to work more with inactives in our ward. When we would talk to them they always talked of having a fear of coming back to church. We have a lot of work to do but we are so excited. We had two of the inactives come to church yesterday and we were so excited. We also made sure that the bishop saw that they were there and asked if he knew them. I think if we have the help of our members we can accomplish so much. We are both really excited for this work and think we can accomplish so much in our time together. Oh and when we travel on Friday we will travel 12 hrs in the night to Cochabamba to listen to Elder Anderson and then travel Saturday back to Potosi. I am excited to listen to Elder Anderson but I must say I am not excited for 12 hrs. I think we will all be falling asleep during the talk. Well the Lord loves us and I have seen that in this work. It looks like bear lake was fun and I am excited for next year. It is in my plans. How did Ash like the singles ward? I bet she could find a guy who is taller than her or the same height unlike someone we know. Well I hope everyone has a fun safe filled week. Love you all lots, THE GOSPEL IS TRUE!!!

Hello hello hello hello I say hello today

Family,


Well I am now back in Potosi. Cochabamba was hot and it made me miss Potosi. I ended up working with Hermanas in Cochabamba Monday night. It was a surprise to us all except the assistant to the president. President Dyer was expecting me to have Family Home evening with them. Then they were surprised when I spent the night with the Hermanas. I received a phone call from President the next morning and he said Hermana Nielsen we would love for you to come back to the house, have breakfast with us and then go to the temple with your comp. I said yes but in my mind I said heck yes. So I ended up going to the temple with the missionaries leaving. After my comp had an interview with the president then she just wanted to sit in the mission home all day and do nothing though we could have gone out and visited her old investigators in Cochabamba so I ended up spending the day with Hermana Dyer running errands and learning about her family. I must say we are now the best of friends. The training in Cochabamba was good we had a two hour training for the trainers and then lunch with our new companions and another training with everyone. After this is my favorite part....we went to the temple again!!! Yes how blessed was I this week! I loved it. There are only 7 trainers. Three Hermanas and 4 Elders. I got to see Hermana Yardley again and I must say I miss that girl. My new compañera es Hermana Cherres, she is from Piora (I don't know how to spell that) Peru. She is 22 years old and her birthday is October 12. She has 5 siblings and she is the youngest. Her favorite color is black. She misses home and her district from the CCM. She has been a member her whole life. The first day here we paid a visit to the Red Cross because our pensanistas daughter works there. Yep she was that sick. She was throwing up a lot the first day and her blood pressure was high. She also had a headache but that is normal for everyone coming to Potosi. The next day (Friday) we spent in the house because she was still sick. Then on Saturday we went out to work. Saturday was also Bolivias Independence's day, so there were a lot of drunk men walking around. Since my area is all hill I am tempted to go and push them and watch them roll down the hill. Don't worry though that isn't missionary like so I don't do it. There were also a lot of parades and dancing going on. Sunday my comp was throwing up again all through church. I told her we needed to leave so she could rest but she wouldn't. Then we went to eat lunch with a member (well I ate lunch) then we went back to the house for her to rest. Now we are here and she has a cold. She keeps saying I only have 3 months here in Potosi. I don't have the heart to tell her that I will more than likely be the one that goes when the 3 months are up. Who knows though I could be here for one more transfer after October. With time she will feel better and we can work hard. We have a baptism next week with Joel. It will be good. Then hopefully we can get in gear with Patricia. I am excited to work with my comp she will be wonderful. We will work miracles here in Potosi. Oh and for traditions for the Hermanas on the nine month mark is usually you take a picture with cloths up your shirt to look like you are pregnant for your 9 months. I don't know if I will be doing that tradition or not. I love you all don't forget that the church is true and that you need to visit the temple. Oh and felicidades Karsyn on your baptism. Way to be an example for everyone.

Well as of right now I am writing to you in Cochabamba!!!! It is so hot here it makes me miss Potosi. I will be heading back to Potosi on Thursday as a...... TRAINER!!! Yep I am training again, do I feel prepared no I do not. Hopefully I can do it right. I don't know why this keeps happening to me but it does. I was supposed to leave for Coch tomorrow morning but since my comp was scheduled to leave this morning and she cant travel alone the President said I was to travel with her. I believe tonight I get to have the last family home evening with all the missionaries leaving because they didn't make plans for me. Then I believe tomorrow is a conference for all the trainers because they are changing the rules. Now it is a guaranty you are with your companion two transfers with two hours of companion study. The first hour is regular companion study the next I get the opportunity to teach her things. What things I don't know but it is in the book they give trainers. I know that she is a North American that can speak Spanish but I don't know her name because the Elders cant pronounce it and didn't write it down. The President came as a surprise visit this week to Potosi and naturally everyone knew of the surprise visit. We had interviews with him after a mini conference and he told me then that he wanted me to be a trainer but he didn't know who I would train. That is my exciting news for you for this week. Other than that I just helped my comp pack and we worked and worked and worked. The winter months end in the end of September beginning of October and then that is when the rain starts in Potosi. I am actually still good on shoes I haven't had the need to look for new ones yet but I am pretty sure here soon I will need to. Oh I also got the package Grandma and Grandpa Nielsen sent me on Thursday also. The Elders helped me open the box and eat the caramels. They thought they were delicious. Well I don't know really what else to write. Life's good the work is good. Investigators can be difficult but the church is true and the Lord loves you.

Well it sounds like a missed a fun family camp. That's OK I will be there next year for the next one and it will be 10 times better because I am there (I am my fathers daughter). This week was good, a bit uneventful. First off dad you will be proud of me I found out my address for you. It is in the street Ingavi. It is house number 152. Yep that is my address. We live with a gillion families. Lets see as you know this is my comps last week as a missionary here in Potosi. She will leave to Cochabamba on Sunday to have a farewell shindig with the president. I don't know what the plans are for me but I am 99.9 percent sure I will just work with Hermana Sullon and Hermana Madrid until my new comp gets here. My comp and I have a bet, she says that I will be a trainer again and I tell her no it will be a North American from Cochabamba because they are due for a transfer. We have a packet of oreos riding on this bet. Now you might ask if she goes to cocha how in the world will I get my oreos (no worries I am right). The beauty of it is that is she is returning to Potosi after a week so how lucky am I. My favorite candy here is I don't remember the names but it is a fruit candy that has lime, orange, cherry and banana flavors. Also I love the wafers they have here, when I eat them I feel like I am in the nursery again. Patricia is doing great. We talked to her to see what was going on, talked about the gospel and have a new date for baptism. She came to church by herself yesterday brought her daughter and her brother. The brother was a surprise. We talked to him once and he didn't seem interested but hey he came to church, maybe it is a sign. We have a Family home evening in a members house tonight. Hopefully that will go good. We are also teaching Madelens family. They have started listening and her younger siblings have a date for the10th of August. They have attended church since we have started teaching them. Then we have another kid we are teaching who's sister is also a member. He is 11 years old and is a hoot. We taught him the 10 commandments yesterday and when we asked a question he would have a whole story about something random and then the answer. I was just laughing the whole time. I love this area, hopefully I am here for at least one more transfer (this transfer doesn't count because I am here no matter what). It is getting warmer now actually, well a bit warmer. This past week was freezing, though everyone has been on winter vacation since the first of the month because this month is the coldest. Well it was extended for one more week because it is supposed to be colder. It wouldn't be as cold if the wind wouldn't blow. They say the wind is the worst in August. I think I told Hadlee this but sometimes I feel like Marilyn Monroe trying to keep my skirts down. I gave a talk in church yesterday, this time the Bishop asked me the day before after we finished eating lunch with his family. It was on how the Young Women's Program helped me prepare for a mission. First he asked my comp but she told him no and said Hermana Nielsen can. It makes sense though since she was never in the YW program. Though she now gets to talk this week on the Relief Society and missionary work. Life here in Bolivia is good. I think the Elders are a little sad because we aren't allowed to play soccer anymore. An Elder who came in my group was sent home because he hurt his knee really bad while playing soccer. Other than that nothing much right now has changed but I am sure a lot will change. Presidet Tenorio was very forgiving. Well I don't know what else to write so remember the Church is true and the Lord loves you.

Hello my family,




First thanks for the package. The shirts and deodorant are awesome. Oh and the birthday cards. I especially felt loved by Cade when he said he missed me and wanted me to come home now. Lets see first off with the questions like always. The birds I see here are Pigeons. I did see a parrot at a members house. That is about all I see, nothing to exciting. Oh I saw my first butterfly and spider the other day since I have been here. Potosi is good. The people here are very relaxed. Some have a very hard life and some are just making it by. Then you also have the people who do have money. For the culture down here yes the children are taken care of. Sometimes we will knock on a door a kid will come. We will ask how old he/she is and they will say from a range of 5 to 10. we ask if their parents are home and they are not. They are working at this time and will not be home until about 9 or 10. I asked my comp who cooks for the kids and she said the parents teach them how to cook and they cook for themselves. I see little kids roaming the streets solo all the time but it is normal here. Lots of the people will work from 8 to 9 at night all week. The most common place for them to work is in the mine. Though there are a lot of lawyers down here. With the hike we left the Zone leaders house at 8, got to the hike about 8:30. We got to the top at 11ish stayed up top to take pictures as a zone because this was the first time that a whole zone hiked to the top. We started hiking down about 12. Few of us got down at 1 but waited another hour for the rest of the group to come down. The rest came down at 2:30 ish then we went and had a hour to eat and then email. Though I was late for email and only got 25 min. That is why my letter wasn't very long last week. My comps knee didn't bother her when we were hiking so maybe the pain is a figment of her imagination. No I am sure her knee was hurting. Lets see this week was good. We had a baptism of a ward member. Well she was baptized a year ago but the kind elders didn't fill out the right form so they couldn't find her. I don't remember the word for it but her paperwork that says that she is a member. Her name is Sarahi and she is 13 years old. Now the baptism was supposed to start at 2 and punto. Everyone kept saying that. Guess what? didn't start at 2 and punto. It started at 3, yep welcome to Bolivia. We have this one investigator Patricia, she is 26 years old and has a desire to learn more. I am really excited about her. Well she had a baptism date for the 27 of this month. Well the rule is, is that they have to attend church 3 times in a row before the baptism. Guess who didn't come to church yesterday :(. She talked to a members of a different ward and he said that her baptism date was to soon and that she needed to learn more before she was baptized. She has had almost all of the lessons she just needs to learn about the Word of Wisdom and the Law of chastity and she has them all. We told her that it was a process of learning in the church. We cant learn everything all at once. We then talked about faith, and we also challenged her to pray about this. I felt the spirit during this lesson and I am sure she did to but oh well we all have our agency. We will just have to continue to work with her and find that ward member and beat him up ha ha no. That was the sad part of the week but other than that the week was good. We taught some people, felt the spirit, there is no doubt in my mind that this work is true and that the church is true. Oh I got a short email from Kevin, sounds like he is excited and ready to work in Mexico. Well life is good have a great week. Give my nephews and nieces a hug for me.

Sorry I am late

Hello family,

Lets see to start with your questions....I did get an egg on my head to be exact two. The Elders had a barbecue last Monday, and during that they said that it was a bbq for the North Americans since it was our independence day. They took pics of all the NA by the meat. Then when we were cleaning up they said oh we need to sing to you for your birthday but you need to stand in the middle. I said no I can stand on the side and you can sing. That didn't fly so I stood in the middle and at the end of the song I got two eggs on my head and a pile of flour on my head. It took three washings to clean out my hair. Also that night my pensonista made lasagna and a cake for me. Then I was sang to then my face was smashed in the cake. Another tradition for down here for you. I am taking warm showers finally. My comp doesn't get sick but right now her knee is hurting her. We walk a little bit slower. She leaves the mission 3 de August. She is excited to be with her family. She will be in La Paz for a week and then come back to Potosi to live because this is where her family lives. When I say we have 10 people in church that is members, us the missionaries, and maybe 1 or 2 investigators that come to church. I have lead the music in church almost every time since I have been here. They do not tell mining jokes in Potosi. At least none that I have heard of. I don't know what picture it was with flour all over me but if it was in Potosi the only time I can think of was when we were playing different games and lets just say shaving cream was involved in one of the games. That is the only time that I can think of. First off my nephew is a cutie he looks like me. I must say though I think J would have been a better middle name ;). I showed him off to everyone. We went to Sucre this week. I didn't get car sick. We met President Dyer and Hermana Dyer. Hermana Dyer doesn't speak a lick of Spanish. I translated for her during the conference. It was a little bit difficult because I would use Spanish words instead of English. Today we all hiked to Cerro Rico. You would be proud of me. Lets just say it is probably a hike that I would do only once. They said that it would be freezing up top but never listen to a latino about cold. That is why we are all late. I don't have anything else to write but HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUM. I hope all is well and that you had a good one. LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW

Hello my family,


Well yep it snowed yesterday. Who would have thought that I would see snow on my birthday? It was wet snow and didn't start sticking to the ground until about 8. Well when I woke up there was about 1 inch of snow but as the morning went on it melted. Everyone is cold but what can you do? Oh all the people here say that it shouldn't snow anymore because Cerro which is like an 8th world wonder or whatever you call it, could collapse and then good bye potosi. It makes people want to listen to us though because they are all terrified of dying. I am going to buy thick nylons that the cholitas wear and leg warmers. I have one pair but I want more. Life is good here. I didn't make the brownies or the cookies because lets just say they do not have any of the ingredients. It was a very sad day for me. This week we got permission from President Tenorio to go ahead with a baptism. We got the permission on Thursday morning planned the baptism for next Saturday so the bishop and ward members could come. Well needless to say she called the Zone Leaders on Sat and they asked why we were waiting and told us to baptize her today so we spent the rest of the day running around like our heads were cut off trying to get ward members to come and find the Bishop. Well the Bishop was traveling and only a few members came but it turned out good. Truth be told I really don't know this investigator very well we have only visited her 2. My comp and her old comp taught this woman, no every missionary in this area taught her. She has been waiting two years to be baptized. She was very excited for this day and she was also baptized with her daughter who is 9. That's probably the most exciting thing that happened this week. I didn't do anything exciting for my birthday because well it was a Sunday and what could I do? My comp told me happy birthday and made me a card in the morning and then we were off to church and to work the rest of the day. I asked a lady to make a cake for me but lets just say she forgot :( oh well I will have to get a cake today and celebrate later. Then it started snowing in the afternoon so not many people would answer their doors. It made for a long afternoon. We talked to an inactive member and he was offended so he stopped coming. We have a lot of these here in Potosi. The youth here are going to the temple today. It is a special temple trip, they are out of school this month because it is when it gets really cold so they planned it for now. They will take a 6 hour bus ride today to Cochabamba then spend one day and leave in the night Tuesday to be back by wed. This cost them about 200 bolivianos, which is a lot for the people here. Be grateful we have a temple not so far away. Lets see what else happened on my birthday oh the zone leaders called to wish me a happy birthday. My comp told them Sat night at the baptism that it was my birthday. It was nice of them to do so. They also said that since it was a tradition to smash an egg on your head they were planning to do so in the morning. I told them they could try but I didn't think it would happen. Now I need to watch my back all day. We have an activity where the elders are going to cook for us today. Hopefully I don't end up getting sick. This week we are going to Sucre Tuesday and Wed. We are welcoming President Dyer to Bolivia. Tuesday is our interviews with him and Wed is our zone conference. We get out of the cold weather for a while. Hopefully I don't get sick. Well hello my family,


First off I thought I was getting a package in December. I wasn't planning on another one, man I feel loved. Your questions, no I don't have a cell phone. Though the rumor is that everyone will be getting one here soon but in my opinion it would be stupid. Yes it would be nice to have one but when you have a lot of elders and sisters who don't follow the rules you are asking for trouble. Madelen has a lot of problems. We have talked to her a lot about church about other things but in all honesty what it comes down to is her making the change. We can teach and talk to her a lot but it is her that needs to change. She has come to church once. Hopefully we can get her to come a lot more. We had more than 10 people show up to church on Sunday. Hermana Menacho and I were also informed that we would be giving the talks right when sacrament started. I took 15 min my comp took 5. I think I take after my father. Ha ha no. I don't even know if they understood me or not. Though I did have a lady come and ask me for the scriptures that I used in my talk. I take that as a good sign. Well lets see I found out a way to always get kids to tell the truth. We have this investigator that we were going to visit. We get to the house and her sister who is a member said she wasn't there. My comp was arguing with her and telling her I know she is here. Well I cut in and I said do you know what happens when we tell the truth Danitsa? She said What? I said that we get many blessings and I pulled out a piece of candy from my backpack. I then asked if she was telling me the truth. She then said no she is here. I gave her the candy, then I said you can have another if you get her. Guess who got another piece of candy. Then we met her again another day and we asked for her sister. She said she isn't here and that is the truth then she asked if she gets some candy. Good thing I always pack candy in my backpack. Also another thing that I found out. I found out how to take warm showers. Usually when I get in the shower I end up doing the cold dance the whole time in the shower and when I get out is when it starts warming up. Well then I started noticing my comp would always ask me how my shower was with a smile on her face. Then when she would get out she would say calientito. I always wondered why she would get a hot shower and I wouldn't. I would play with the nozzle a bit to see if it would warm up. Needless to say it wouldn't. Then I noticed that she would always insist that I go first. Then it donned on me I probably heat up the shower for her. Well yesterday morning I decided to test the theory a bit. I could have just asked but I wanted to experiment. We wake up at 5:30 Sundays so we can be out to pick up our investigators by 7 (church starts at 8) It is freezing and my comp says you get the shower first. I told her no I wanted her to enter first. She says no you, I tell her that I always go first and wanted blessing by letting her go first. She says well you get blessings by going first and I said well I want to find out what the blessings are by going last. She tried to convince me to go in but I wouldn't so she finally went in. I did find out the blessings yesterday of going second. You get a warm shower. Then today she said yes it is your turn to go first. I asked why she didn't like going first and she told me that the water was warmer when I went first. I told her that is fine but we need an every other day schedule for this. So now one day she gets in first and the other I get in first. I guess the blessings of getting in first is that I exercise while in the shower. I mean by doing the cold dance I think that is a bit of a work out. Who knows now I might just end up getting fat. That is my exciting week besides transfers. We worked in a trio with Hermana Madrid this week for 2 days. Lets just say she was having a hard time walking the hills in our area. Her area is flat. Lets just say she was grateful for her area near the end. I washed my coat and put it outside and it turned into ice on the sleeves. Ha ha it is cold in the morning and night. We are working hard trying to find new people and getting people to come to church. Its hard sometimes but so worth it. Life is good here in Bolivia. The church is true. Buen Dia

Well life here in Potosi is good. It is getting colder, I don't think it would be as cold if the wind didn't blow. Wow is all I can say you asked a lot of questions in this letter but didn't write much. I have a favor to ask first. I need the recipe for chocolate chip cookies and brownies. Since my birthday is coming up and my pensonista has an oven I am going to see if she will let me cook them at her house. Mind you the oven is very different so we shall see if it will work out. Well transfers are this week. 9 people are leaving Potosi, I am staying with my comp. Looks like I will be a killing her off. We had another no show at a baptism. That's OK because no one came to the baptism anyway. None of the ward members or bishop. We have a lot of work to do in our ward. We had about 20 people in sacrament. It was a good week though, it is an experience we can learn from and improve on. That stinks about the photos. I spent 25 bolivianos on that sucker. Looks like I will be finding a new way. I deleted some pictures also this stinks. Well lets start with your questions..first the fashion here is in the late 80s early 90s a lot of the time. There is definitely nothing I will want to wear at home. Well I do want to buy a cholita outfit because I think it would just be fun to have. I have not tried llama unfortunately. I really want to try it but no one makes it. I have had cow heart though, it is chewy and it is OK I guess. Lets see my favorite thing my pensonista makes is home made french fries about a mountain of them with ground beef, onion, and tomatoes (yes tomatoes) on top. Also some kind of sauce that she puts on it, it is delicious. Though I must say she makes pretty good tacos, pizza and pancakes. That is the best thing about Elders they teach the pensonistas how to make everything so I can just sit and enjoy the efforts of the Elders. Pancakes are huge here and everyone asks if I know how to make them. I bow my head in sham and say no. Then they make a shocked noise and ask how. I am a shame to the North Americans every where. With lessons a week it depends. This week we were down some than normal. I don't have any cool dog stories. The dogs are pretty good, if they bark at ya or act like they will attack you just pick up a rock and chuck it at them and they run like crazy. When dogs get hit by a car the people don't eat them, other dogs and the pigs eat them. This is why we cant eat pig. My comp is very sweet I don't know what I like best about her. She likes that I am North American and that I am very easy going. She told me this the other day. She had a hard time with her last comp. I don't know if the Latinos get as sick as the North Americans at first but what I do know is that they are babies about it. It is like the world is going to die. They also tell everyone about it and everyone gives remedies on how to fix the problem. They also use the excuse it is just the cold. Your stomach hurts, it is because it is cold. Your head hurts, cold. You have a pain in your leg, cold. I just laugh. Lots of people name their children Paula, Kevin, Bryan, and Rosemery. Don't worry dad I have met a few Davids. I don't need skirts. I can buy some here if all else fails. I retired two skirts while I am here. They are a bit shorter than the others. I will be looking at stockings that the cholitas wear today, well at least that is the plan. Who wants to write me, you can tell everyone to write me but the thing is, is I don't know if I will be writing them back. I will try but I cant promise anyone I will write back. Remember that I want the recipe for Chocolate chip cookies and brownies. Now to my father, Happy Fathers day. Your card should come to you next week. You are an awesome dad and I love you lots. And then I got sick...

Familia en Utah y wherever the rest of my family might be,

Well this week was good as usual we worked and worked more. We went to Sucre to say goodbye to President and Hermana Tenorio. We left the Zone leaders house at 7:30 in the morning. The ride was just exciting, first my comp got car sick. I ate some bread and when we were so close to Sucre I had to have the Taxi driver pull over so I could throw up. Yep I got car sick, who would have thought that the first time I would have thrown up on the mission would be because I got car sick. I was feeling a little queasy at one stop we made. At that stop the Cholitas come up and want you to buy food, so you have llama in a bag, other meet in a bag, a roll up of some kind and jello. Hermana Madrid was hungry and wanted food so she bought some to share. I told her no thank you. Just to say the smell made me even more queasy and you know the rest. Well I know for when we travel to Sucre again in July to greet the new President that I will not eat anything on the way down. The way back to Potosi I just slept so that I wouldn't think about my stomach. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive. The farewell was good we watched a talk given by Elder Holland when he was in the MTC in January. President and Hermana Tenorio bore their testimonies and told us to be obedient. Then at the end he said that him and Hna Tenorio wanted to give us all hugs. I thought the Elders would hug President and the Hermanas hug Hna Tenorio. Nope we hugged them both, I must say it was a bit awkward hugging President Tenorio. From 7 months of not hugging any guy it was awkward. Lets see what else.....oh yea I was looking through the area book on Thursday during our planning for the next week. I looked at the people who were baptized but never come to church and felt that we should visit a girl named Madelen. Well we went to her house and talked to her. She then asked who sent us. We replied no one, and we explained that we just had a feeling we needed to visit her. Well she then explains that an Elder visited her the other day Elder Fernandez. E Fernadez is an assistant to the President and was checking up on Potosi also my area was his area so he was visiting people he taught. She talked to him and he said he would send us over to visit her. We then told her that he didn't say anything to us. She started crying we talked about the gospel and plan to visit her more to help her. It was a good experience the things you can accomplish when you listen to the spirit. The other Monday we went to the house of the devil or tio as they say. It was in the mines in cerro rico. It was very interesting...I plan on sending pics today because last Monday I didn't send the letter so I am sorry dad you will get your card late for fathers day. I love you any way. Lets see good desserts are the cakes, I haven't had anything to die for. In Cochabamba they have Globos which is an ice cream place. They have really good esnickers ice cream. The e is very important before Sprite and Snickers or they don't know what you are asking. The alfajors are pretty good. They make really good flem here dad. Also they eat a lot of Jello for dessert. We have been eating jello all wrong in the states. You eat it for dessert not part of the meal. We have a few investigators. This area is a lot easier than Cochabamba more people listen but they don't follow up on their commitments. I think they listen just to listen. They Elders don't ride bikes. I think we would all die going down the hills. It is cold in the Morning and nights. Usually during the day it is pretty warm. Though if the wind is blowing it makes it colder. It sounds like everyone is doing good. Someone give Trey a big hug for me I can tell who loves me best. Oh with the girl who just got her call tell her to bring a little of every weather cloths. I really don't know what she should bring except for that. Oh bring a really good umbrella because the umbrellas here stink, maybe some boots. Its cccccc cold outside Im fufufufufufufreezing. I don't remember the rest of the song. It is starting to get really cold outside. I don't think it would be so bad if the wind wasn't blowing. Though they say it is just starting. Life is good the Bishop just talked about what was going on in the ward and wanted to see how I was doing. My Zone leaders right now are Latinos one from Chile the other from Argentina. Don't worry I didn't hit them I took the higher road and forgave them for being stupid. Now I need to ask forgiveness for calling them stupid. Lets see this week was good. We had another no show for a baptism. This time the leaders weren't mad. We are visiting the casa del diablo today. Yep we are representatives of the Lord and we are going to the devils house. It should be interesting, I am just excited for pants. Any activity that we do on P-day and we get permission to wear pants I am very excited. I am starting to read the New Testament and I love it. It is very interesting to read everything. I have started this week to read it in my spare time and I am finishing up St John right now. You might say wow you have a lot of spare time. Well it helps that when my comp answers the phone and it is our district leader they end up having a 30-45 min conversation about nothing. When he calls and I answer we have about a 2 second conversation. I sometimes have a hard time understanding him because he is from Chile and in Chile they sure talk fast and it doesn't help that he has a lisp. Today my comp was listening to her music and on comes Rascal Flats I told her Hermana you know that is music of the world and she said really and changed it. Then we moved on to another song and it was Tim Mcgraw again I informed her. Then we changed it one more time and it was Regina Specter. I was tempted to leave that on but I told her again. Finally we found church music and I didn't feel guilty. I sent a CD of pictures you should get it this week I hope. Let me know if you get them because I want to erase the photos from my camera. Um oh also there is a letter for Chase and Lacie in there. If you read it I will send my Bolivian friends to attack! Ha ha no the Bolivians are crazy they all chew coco leaves and it is sick. My comps parents in La Paz are drug dealers also, they sale the coco leaves. When you talk to someone and they have a chunk in their cheek it wreaks and you kinda want to puke. I will be also sending dad a letter in the mail today. Sorry you will be getting it late for fathers day. Also a letter for Shay and Bryan. What it do?

Hello,

First I meant to say that it was changed for the week but I guess I left that part out hu. I received the letters from Bishop, Chad, and Tiffany. Bishop just wants to have a long conversation with me about something. Chad was just letting me know the cities he visited and that he is now in Alaska. Tiffany is getting married in August but her fiance Forrest got re-assigned to Cali so in June they will move there and August they will come back for the wedding. They plan on having kids soon so she will be a stay at home mom. That is the news. Lets see because you don't have any questions I don't have much to write because I wrote on Wed. Well we were supposed to have 3 baptisms this week. Two of them didn't show up to their interview with our district leader. We talked to them later and she said she wasn't sure because her family keeps on telling her not to be baptized. Her little brother wants to but her mom is listening to her family and isn't sure if she wants him to. He is 11 and reminds me a lot of Cade, his name is Yeison (Jason). The other one showed up to the interview had plans for baptism but guess who didn't show up. We talked to her Sunday and she went to the hospital with her mom to visit her uncle. She re-scheduled for Thursday, lets just say our Zone Leaders were not happy with us because our baptisms fell through. We received a lecture from them about it, lets just say near the end of the lecture I wanted to punch them. Then I remembered they are my leaders and I need to respect them. I received a call from President Tenorio Wed night. The first thing I told him was that if someone died I didn't want to know. He just laughed and told me that wasn't why he was calling. He was making sure I had warm clothes because him and Hermana Tenorio were worried about me. Apparently a Hermana in Cochabamba has pneumonia and Hermana Bates said something about me that I didn't have winter clothes. I reassured him that I have a coat and I bought some things to keep warm. He them advised me on what else I should buy. Then he said and you have your sleeping bags in your house at night to keep warm. I told him we didn't have sleeping bags without thinking. He then said well your Zone Leaders should have bought them and given them to you already. Guess who got the sleeping bags the next night, maybe that is why we got the lecture from the zone leaders. Um lets see what else. Oh I was called hermana Petersen 4 times by my bishop here in Potosi. He asked if the missionaries would take up the rest of the time and Hna Menacho would go first and Hermana Petersen would go second. I was tempted not to go up but then someone corrected him, darn. We met a women while door contacting, she started crying and saying she wanted a change in her life and that she drinks to much. We talked to her, taught her how to pray and shared some scriptures then set up another appointment. The next day we ran into her and she hugged us and said that she has started praying and she just feels peace inside. It was an amazing experience to see the change in someone. She looked happier then when we first met her. That tells ya how powerful this gospel is especially the power of prayer. Whoot whoot I love this gospel. Well I have nothing much to share in all honesty. My comp is a little trunky she has 64 days left she told me this morning.
